Hull Collegiate School Case Study

Hull Collegiate School Improves Management Control
Over The PC Fleet, Whilst Significantly Reducing Their
Power Consumption With PC Remote Shutdown.

Hull Collegiate School was established when Hull’s top independent schools Hull Grammar School and Hull High School merged in September 2005, to provide a co-educational independent school. Combining the best from both schools the aim is to provide a school based on community togetherness. A multi million investment by the parent company United Church Schools Trust provides the very best learning environment with state-of-the-art facilities.

The key objective for the school is to bring out the best in each child, in a positive environment in which pupils will feel safe, valued and happy. Hull Collegiate School is an inclusive, family school with a Christian foundation. In a caring and secure environment, it supports and challenges its pupils to achieve the best of which they are capable both inside and outside the classroom.

The Business Problem

As part of the investment in technology the 850 pupils share some 300 computers which mean that computing represented a significant element in the school’s both the power consumption. As a caring part of the community the school was conscious of the fact that the power consumption of the PCs had a significant environmental impact. Brad Ashton Network Manager for the School decided to investigate the market and to find a solution which would ensure
that PCs were sleeping or turned off whilst not in use as well as over night. This would enhance the management control, provide savings for IT, as well as financial and environmental savings.

The Business Solution

It was at this point that Brad heard of Aquarius Software whose product PC Remote Shutdown was designed specifically for the academic environment and which now has hundreds of thousands of users in schools and colleges throughout the world. Brad contacted Team Logic who are the PC Remote Shutdown distributor for Great Britain and Ireland who arranged a trial license, to allow the School to test the software in their own environment. After a thorough investigation of the alternatives it became clear that Aquarius PC Remote Shutdown would fully meet the School’s needs, and would
provide greater management control, and at the same time significantly reduce electricity consumption.

In July 2008 Hull Collegiate ordered PC Remote Shutdown from Team Logic and rolled it out across the network to become operational in a matter of days.

“PC Remote Shutdown proved easy to configure and install with its intuitive interface and has proved robust and reliable in use. It provides us with significant reductions in our electricity usage and an attractive return on investment.” Brad Ashton, Network Manager, Hull Collegiate School
